The Old Man of Stoer is a dramatic 60-metre sea stack of Torridonian sandstone rising from the sea off the Point of Stoer, one of the most spectacular coastal formations on the NC500. The stack is separated from the mainland cliffs by a narrow channel and is a celebrated rock climbing destination โ the first ascent was made in 1966. The walk to see the Old Man follows 1.5 miles of dramatic clifftop from the Stoer Lighthouse along the top of impressive red sandstone cliffs, with seabirds wheeling below and often Atlantic grey seals hauled out on the rocks. The views north and west, to the Outer Hebrides and across the empty northwest Sutherland coast, are exceptional.
From Lochinver take the B869 north past Achmelvich. After 8 miles turn left at Stoer village onto the minor road to the lighthouse (5 miles). NOT suitable for large motorhomes.
