About Falls of Shin

The Falls of Shin on the River Shin south of Lairg are one of the best places in the Scottish Highlands to watch Atlantic salmon leaping upstream during their autumn and summer migration. The falls themselves are not dramatically high, but watching 1-metre-plus salmon hurling themselves up against the white water is genuinely thrilling β€” the river can be choked with fish in a good season. A well-maintained riverside walk leads to the viewing platform above the falls. The surrounding woodland is home to red squirrels, and the visitor centre has a cafΓ© and gift shop. Formerly part of the Harrods empire β€” the late Mohamed Al Fayed owned the nearby Balnagowan Estate β€” the area retains an air of former grandeur.
