Calda House is a substantial roofless ruin standing adjacent to Ardvreck Castle on Loch Assynt β the two ruins complement each other perfectly and are always visited together. Calda House was built in 1726 by the Mackenzie family (who bought the Assynt estates from the MacLeods) as a much grander replacement for the medieval castle. The house was gutted by fire in 1737, just 11 years after completion, under circumstances that remain mysterious (arson has long been suspected). The tall, window-pierced faΓ§ades of the shell survive to near full height, giving the ruin a dramatic, haunting quality. The combination of the medieval castle tower and the Georgian shell, side by side on the loch shore, is one of the most atmospheric spots in the whole Highlands.
Same access as Ardvreck Castle β A837 layby at Loch Assynt. Walk past Ardvreck to reach Calda House.
