Nybster is primarily known for its Iron Age broch โ a circular tower typical of the Caithness and Northern Isles coastline โ sitting on a narrow promontory north of Wick with extensive coastal views. The Caithness Broch Project has documented the site and the surrounding area has a high density of prehistoric and historic remains. While technically a broch rather than a medieval castle, the site forms part of the broader pattern of coastal defensive structures in Caithness and is freely and easily accessible from the road with a short walk.
On the A99 north of Wick. Turn off at Nybster โ signed from the main road.
