Gairloch is a scattered community of small settlements on the western coast of Ross-shire, centred on a beautiful bay with the mountains of Torridon and Flowerdale Forest rising behind it. The village has an excellent heritage museum, a good fuel station, a Tesco Express and several excellent cafΓ©s and restaurants β a surprisingly complete set of services for such a remote location. The whale and dolphin watching boat trips from Gairloch Harbour are among the best in Scotland β minke whales, harbour porpoise, common dolphins and occasionally orca are regularly seen. Big Sand beach, a few miles north, is a magnificent wide sandy bay with mountain views.
