About Dunscaith Castle

Dunscaith Castle is a remote and atmospheric ruin on the southern tip of the Applecross Peninsula, sitting on a sea stack connected to the shore by natural rock bridges. The castle has legendary connections to Scathach (or Sgathach), the mythological Irish warrior-woman who supposedly trained the hero CΓΊ Chulainn in martial arts at a castle of this name β€” though the existing remains are medieval rather than mythological. The ruins are fragmentary but the setting is extraordinary, and the walk across the Applecross Peninsula from the campsite is a rewarding adventure in itself. Very few NC500 travellers visit, which makes it all the more worthwhile for those who seek it out.

🚐 Motorhome Tip NOT suitable for large motorhomes β€” the Applecross Peninsula access is via either the Bealach na BΓ  (dangerous for large vehicles) or the long coastal road via Shieldaig (accessible). From Applecross village, a walk south along the shore leads to the castle (about 3 miles each way). Alternatively drive the coastal road south toward Camusteel.

Getting There

Drive south from Applecross village along the coastal road to Camusteel. Walk to the castle from the road end (rough ground). OS map essential.

Best Time to Visit

May to September. Dry conditions essential for the approach across rocky ground.
